Course Description

Quilts protect us against the cold by offering comfort and warmth. They also wrap us in stories. Each scrap of cloth holds a memory, and each carefully stitched layer reveals something of the maker. With a focus on hand-sewing and an emphasis on repurposing textiles, students learn a variety of quilting techniques. This course covers fabric basics, simple stitching, block construction, patchwork and piecing, appliqué, improvisational quilting, ?nishing and binding. Drawing inspiration from the historical and cultural contexts embedded within these techniques, along with examples from contemporary art, students work towards their own mini-quilt project in which they explore themes of personal narrative and story-telling. Although designed as an introductory level course, all skill-levels are welcome! No sewing machine required.

Student are required to supply some materials for this course.
