ESPN-0247 - NEW! Watercolour Painting: Poison & Petals: Dark Botanicals Online
Course Description

Through a blend of botanical observation, watercolour technique, and mythological storytelling, students will paint historically feared anf folklore-rich plants such as foxglove, deadly nightshade, hemlock, mandrake, and poison ivy. Each class pairs painting skills with cultural context, encouraging students to think not just about what they are painting, but why it looks the way it does - and how meaning is embedded in visual form.
In this course, students will:
- Strengthen foundational watercolour skills through close observation of botanicals such as foxglove, deadly nightshade, hemlock, mandrake, and poison ivy.
- Practice and refine techniques including wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, glazing, layering, and negative painting to capture subtle colour shifts and intricate plant structures.
- Develop confidence in rendering detailed botanical forms while maintaining clarity and cohesion in composition.
- Explore how colour, shape, and texture contribute to mood and meaning within a painting.
- Combine technical skill with historical and folklore context to create finished artworks that feel both visually compelling and conceptually rich.
