Course Description

Captivated by the city? Inspired by busy streets, architectural forms, artificial light, movement, perspective, and vast human-built spaces, Urban Landscape is a cityscape focused painting course. This class is open to painters of all levels and will focus on the technical challenges involved in painting urban spaces as well as introducing ways of thinking critically about the subject. Students will learn to work with acrylic paint, learn methods of painting from photos and drawings, and participate in group discussions of their work. In the spring term we’ll also have a session outdoors covering plein-air painting & urban sketching! We will also look at examples of work from prominent historic and contemporary artists. Urban Landscape is a great follow up for painters who have taken Introductory Acrylic!

In this course, students will learn:

  • How to work with acrylic paint and supplies to create cityscape paintings
  • How to use perspective to achieve depth in painting
  • About colour theory and various colour based approaches to creating depth
  • How to handle light sources, both natural and artificial in landscape.
  • How to simplify and edit composition to achieve a successful painting.
  • How to simplify complex forms found in cityscape.
  • Various ways of approaching cityscape, including representational painting, working from life, and working with abstraction.
