ESPN-0245 - New! Painting Online: The Art of Illuminated Manuscripts
Course Description
Create paintings inspired by the art of illuminated manuscripts, beautifully decorated handmade books from the medieval and renaissance eras. We will use modern materials, gouache or watercolour paint and paper, to explore topics including miniature painting, borders, lettering, marginalia, and trompe l’oeil.
In this course, students will:

View examples of manuscript illumination in many different styles

Learn how to create borders and other decorative elements with botanical, animal and abstract motifs.

Explore calligraphy using an alphabet in a medieval style.

Learn how to paint a miniature landscape

Make connections between art of the past and contemporary art

Use inspiration from art of the past to create new original paintings
