Course Description

In this course students learn a variety of appliqué and embroidery techniques to create their own textile collage. With a focus on form, layering, and creating contrasting textures, students will each create their own decorative wall hanging. This course covers paper template appliqué, reverse appliqué, continuous bias binding, working with fusible web, English paper piecing, a variety of embroidery stitches, binding and hanging sleeves. Drawing inspiration from historical and contemporary examples of appliqué, students will learn the cultural context embedded within these techniques as we explore these processes as a form of textile collage. Although designed as an introductory level course, all skill-levels are welcome!
