Course Description

This course builds on the traditions established by Dada and Surrealism, art movements founded in the early 20th century that embraced the absurd and nonsensical as a response to political conflicts of the time. Over six classes, we will harness the power of collage in image and text form, with the aim of creating thought-provoking and visually dynamic works. Each week you will be guided by a new prompt (exquisite corpse exercise, blind drawing, cut-up poems, among others) and a range of materials including paint, printed matter, text, and objects. This class encourages participants to take creative risks and express their own ideas and beliefs, culminating in a final work on canvas.
