MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning – Fashion Hacking Program 2021-2022

In 2021, the MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning and NSCAD Art Factory partnered to co-develop a Fashion Hacking Program for youth ages 12-19.  In the summer of 2021, we offered a one-week Fashion Hacking camp for youth that took place in the Fashion Studio at NSCAD. The camp was co-facilitated by staff from MacPhee Center and NSCAD student facilitators. In 2022, with support from CLARI, we programmed a second Fashion Hacking Summer Camp, a 10-week after school program and started creating a manual documenting the teachings and learnings that took place through the program.

Fashion Hacking is a practice that deconstructs discarded or thrifted garments to change their meaning. Through “hacking”, citizen designers can alter and manipulate garments to make one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect the needs and identity of the wearer.
