Course Description

This course will introduce students of all skill levels to various techniques and methodologies used to abstract the landscape. Students will learn to work loosely with acrylic paint and incorporate various mark making techniques, compositional strategies, and abstract elements in their paintings. Working with photographs, memory, and observation, we will explore how to reduce elements found in nature into their simplest forms. Each class will begin with a spotlight on artists with various technical approaches to abstract landscape painting.

In this course, you will learn: 

  • Traditional and non-traditional methods of applying acrylic paint
  • Mark-making techniques and compositional strategies used to abstract the landscape
  • Various methods and processes used to simplify elements found in nature (through photography, memory, and observation)
