Course Description

‘Painterly approaches to Black and White Portraiture’ will teach you how to draw through the lens of a painter! Get an introduction to portrait drawing by exploring different mediums with a “painterly” or “painters” approach. While discovering the potential of various media, students will also learn the basics of proportion, rhythms, planes and features of the human head. By utilizing various types of charcoal, ink pens and tools such as stumps, brushes and blending materials students will explore various techniques of drawing from photographic reference. While the primary goal of this course is to expose students to the potential of various drawing materials, we will also explore how the understanding of fundamental drawing concepts such as line quality, edges and lighting are manipulated to create a three dimensional illusion.
